Rafael Lucena is full professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Córdoba (Spain). His research has evolved from designing analyzers based on spectroscopic (IR) and non-spectroscopic (evaporative light scattering) techniques to designing new microextraction techniques (e.g., stir membrane extraction and effervescence-assisted extraction), new sorptive materials (e.g., cellulose-based sorbents), new microextraction devices (e.g., environmental samplers), and new couplings with mass spectrometry. According to Scopus, he has co-authored 168 scientific publications with 5550 citations (H-index of 42). He has published 25 book chapters and edited two books, including “Analytical Sample Preparation With Nano- and Other High-Performance Materials” (Elsevier, 2021). He also holds three patents. He has supervised 11 Ph.D. students and currently supervises four more. Over the past decade, he has mentored 17 students from various countries.
Prof. Lucena has co-directed four research projects and one transfer project, all funded by the Spanish State Research Agency. Internationally, he is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS), and the EuChemS-DAC Sample Preparation Study Group and Network. He is an associate editor of Advances in Sample Preparation (Elsevier).
